Sensations!
by Ben of Absolute!
This single word characterizes
today's press perfectly. Not only
money makes the world go around, but
as it seems sensations aswell.
Especially, when readers buy mostly
the magazine with the wildest
sensations.
Just think about the things happened
in the UK some months ago. With
special cameras hidden in a fitness
center Princess Diana was
photographed. Of course it was
against her individual human rights,
but in the hard competiton most of the
magazines have lost their honour. A
big scandal was made from this sadly
not unique case, and a lot of people
were against the magazine.
Since we know the diskmagazine RAW, we
can also say a perfect exaple about
the mentioned case from our world, the
scene. RAW published the first real
sensations, what shocked its readers
and helped to reach the top to Lord
Helmet and his Staff. From about one
year another typical "interesting"
mags were born, especially Upstream
wants to take RAW's place, not only in
the charts, but also in the publishing
of wild stories and happenings.
I agree with the opinions of most
journalists, who say that sensations
sell the mag, but I also share the
opinion of those who point on the
dangers of sensations.
@IPpaperC
There are two things facing in this
problem, first the personal rights,
second the freedom of the press.
Staying in the mentioned example,
Princess Diana's image was damaged,
one member of the royal family was
disturbed while weight-lifting and the
photo was published! This act passed
the limits and a high amount of money
was payed by the magazine.
As I see, this case is not so
different than the scene sensations.
There are a lot of articles nowadays
about personal secrets, legends are
ruined and as main difference in the
scene there's nothing to control the
content of magazines. We don't have
written laws or courts, so the
responsibility of scene mags is even
greater than in the outer world's
press. The scene needs fresh news
(positive sensations) but NOT articles
about a famous scene person's personal
life (girlfriends, drug problems etc.)
unless he is the one who wants to
publish them...
The task is double:
. Editors and article-writers have
to think over the possible effect of
their articles and especially main
editors have to deselect the harmful
ones. (forgetting the lack of
articles, that they lose one article)
. The readers have to publish their
reactions, in case they are against
that kind of articles.
